Chlorogenic acid: providing new possibilities for anti-aging
Oct 22, 2018

How to fight aging is probably a topic that everyone cares about, and it is also the content that

relevant researchers have been working on. As the aging population intensifies, diseases related to

aging are gaining more and more attention. Revealing the mechanism of aging and finding drugs or

compounds that can resist aging have become a major issue in the field of aging research.

Recently, a research result may provide a new idea for people to resist aging - using chlorogenic acid.

The team of Luo Huairong, a researcher at the Kunming Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences, found that chlorogenic acid, which is present in a large number of plants, has an anti-aging effect. Related research results have recently been published in the international journal "Geriatrics

(Biomedical)".

Can prolong the life of Caenorhabditis elegans

Mention of chlorogenic acid may be familiar to some people. Chlorogenic acid is found in a large number of plants, such as tea, coffee, honeysuckle, etc. It is one of the effective pharmacological

ingredients of antibacterial and antiviral in many Chinese herbal medicines and natural products. In

past scientific research, researchers have discovered that chlorogenic acid has a wide range of effects such as antibacterial, antiviral, white blood cell, liver and gallbladder, anti-tumor, blood pressure

lowering, blood lipid lowering, free radical scavenging and excitatory central nervous system. .

However, the effects and mechanisms of chlorogenic acid on aging have remained unclear.

effect

Tea and coffee are the most extensive daily beverages in the world. People have conducted extensive

research on the physiological functions of these two substances. We conducted a literature survey and found that the chlorogenic acid, a common ingredient in tea and coffee, has an anti-inflammatory effect. It has a preventive effect on aging-related diseases. Therefore, we conclude that chlorogenic acid may have anti-aging effects." Luo Huairong told the Journal of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Luo Huairong's research team began to use the C. elegans model to explore the anti-aging effect of

chlorogenic acid and its mechanism of action. "C. elegans is a model organism for aging research. Its

life span is short, only 2 to 3 weeks. The physiological function and genetic background are clear.

There are many genetic mutants that can be used, and it is easy to conduct physiological signal

regulation analysis at the overall level of animals." For the use of C. elegans as a model, Luo Huairong explained.

After systematic research, the findings of the Luo Huairong team confirmed the original conjecture that chlorogenic acid can prolong the life of wild-type C. elegans by 20.1%.
